Residents of Yekaterinburg are engaged in a heated debate regarding the acceptability of children swimming in the city’s fountains, as opinions diverge sharply on the matter. While some defend the children’s right to enjoy themselves, others express serious concerns about the potential health risks associated with the fountain water.
Many residents are wary of children playing in fountains due to the water quality. Concerns have been voiced about the cleanliness of the water, with some individuals pointing out that the water is “technical water” and can be contaminated by various sources, including people washing themselves or their pets, and even urination. The risk of contracting infections such as rotaviruses, streptococci, staphylococci, and lice are among the main worries voiced by concerned residents.
However, there is also a considerable number of residents who support the children’s right to swim in the fountains. Some argue that childhood is a time for carefree fun and that swimming in fountains should be allowed. Others suggest that the fountains serve a purpose beyond mere aesthetics and can provide a much-needed source of recreation for children, especially since alternative swimming locations are not readily accessible for many families.
Despite the supportive viewpoints, even some of those who encourage the activity express reservations about appropriate attire, finding the sight of children running around in their underwear to be somewhat unpleasant.
