Yekaterinburg is experiencing a period of abnormally high temperatures this June, with residents seeking various ways to cope with the heat. The unusually hot weather, which began at the end of May, has seen temperatures significantly above average.
The Ural Hydrometeorological Center reports that the average temperature for the first ten days of June was 4-6°C above normal. Yekaterinburg recorded a temperature of +20.8°C, which is +5.7°C above the norm, tying for 4th-5th place with 1991. Precipitation has been minimal, with only 8% of the monthly norm for the region and a mere 1% in Yekaterinburg.
On June 11, the city became intensely hot, causing cars to overheat and igniting poplar fluff. Residents sought refuge in fountains and near reservoirs.
Locals shared their strategies for dealing with the heat, including staying indoors with air conditioning, drinking lemonade or water with ice, taking cool baths, and drinking green tea with lemon. Some residents who recently moved from colder climates are enjoying the warmth.
Authorities remind the public that swimming in the Iset River is prohibited.
Relief is expected soon, as a cold atmospheric front is forecasted to arrive on June 12, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms. Precautions are advised in such weather.
