Yekaterinburg Authorities Consider Removing Flashy Signs from Vainer Street

Yekaterinburg city authorities are still considering removing flashy signs from Vainer Street, despite the lack of current reconstruction plans. This issue was recently brought up by entrepreneurs who operate businesses on the street, who recalled discussions about reconstruction projects that began in 2021.

The mayor’s office has stated that there are currently no plans to reconstruct the main pedestrian street, even though a landscaping project was developed in 2023. NeoConsultingGroup was awarded the municipal contract for creating sketches, receiving 170,000 rubles.

The city’s chief architect, Ruslan Gabdrakhmanov, clarified that a design code has been developed for the central part of Yekaterinburg, including a section of Vainer Street from Lenin Avenue to Malysheva Street. This code specifies facade layouts with color schemes, establishes types of architectural facade lighting, and determines optimal parameters for signs, including sizes and colors, to ensure they harmonize with the architectural and stylistic features of the city’s tourist center.

Currently, the city is working with commercial property owners to bring facades into compliance with the design code. Signs have already been replaced at 12 and 16 Vainer Street.

The architecture department has emphasized that the process is complicated by the presence of 22 buildings on the pedestrian street that are recognized as monuments and protected by the state.

In 2021, architects presented reconstruction projects for the street, suggesting the removal of excessive signs and banners, as well as the planting of trees. The renovation was initially planned for the city’s 300th anniversary but was postponed due to insufficient funding. In 2023, a giant media screen and many benches were installed on Vainer Street.
