Woolly Mammoth Tooth Discovered in Nizhny Novgorod

Archaeologists in Nizhny Novgorod have unearthed a woolly mammoth molar during excavations in the city center. The discovery was made on the slope of the Pochainsky ravine, near Rozhdestvenskaya Street, at a depth of approximately two meters.

The Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, shared photos of the find on his Telegram channel on August 1. This discovery marks another instance of mammoth remains being found in the city.

Previously, in the 1930s, mammoth remains were discovered at the foot of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. According to scientists, the Middle Volga region was once inhabited by mammoths.

The species began to die out approximately 11,000 years ago, primarily due to climate change. The area where the tooth was found is currently the site of a new terraced park that has been under construction for the past two years.
