WhatsApp May Face Restrictions in Russia as Unfriendly Software

WhatsApp is likely to face restrictions in Russia as it may be included in the list of software from unfriendly countries.

According to Anton Gorelkin, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, the messenger, owned by Meta, could be subject to restrictions as the Russian Government is developing the list on the instructions of the President.

Gorelkin stated that WhatsApp should prepare to leave the Russian market.

The government is tasked with compiling a list of software from unfriendly countries by September 1 of this year. This directive followed a meeting between the President of Russia and business representatives, where concerns were raised about foreign companies that have not fully exited the Russian market.

A national messenger is currently being developed as a replacement for WhatsApp.

The situation surrounding Telegram remains uncertain, with its jurisdiction being unclear. While registered in the British Virgin Islands, the main office of Pavel Durov’s company is located in the United Arab Emirates. Gorelkin believes that Telegram may not be included in the list, particularly if it adheres to Russian legislation and demonstrates its commitment to remaining in the market.

During the meeting with the President, representatives suggested “slightly restricting” companies like Zoom and Microsoft, arguing that the Russian industry is incurring significant losses due to the operation of these services.
