Unified State Exam: Grounds for Removal and Consequences

Russian schoolchildren face strict regulations during the Unified State Exam (ЕГЭ), and violations can lead to removal from the exam and cancellation of results. The exam period continues until June 11th, and students need to be aware of the rules to avoid serious consequences.

The most common reason for removal is the use of prohibited items, such as mobile phones, headphones, smart watches, cheat sheets, and USB drives, even if they are not used. Communication with other test-takers or transferring materials during the exam is also prohibited. Unauthorized actions with exam materials, such as photographing, copying, or removing them from the classroom, are also grounds for removal. Disruptive behavior, such as leaving the classroom without permission or displaying aggressive conduct, can also lead to expulsion.

The consequences of removal are severe: cancellation of results and the loss of the opportunity to retake the exam in the current year. Students are advised to only bring permitted items: a pen, passport, water, chocolate, and necessary medicine. Specific subjects allow additional materials, such as orthographic dictionaries for literature and non-programmable calculators for biology, chemistry, geography, and physics.

Even seemingly harmless situations can lead to problems. In the past, students have been removed for having a phone in their pocket, even after turning it in, or for traces of gel pen on their hand that resembled erased notes. Cases have also occurred where students were penalized for cheat sheets found near them in the restroom, even if they didn’t belong to them.

If a student is removed from the exam, they will be asked to sign a violation report. If they disagree with the report, they should not sign it but instead write about their disagreement and request a copy of the report. They can then file an appeal within two days to the conflict commission of their region, through the school, or via the Gosuslugi portal. If the commission upholds the decision, the student can appeal to the court.

The remaining ЕГЭ schedule includes exams in Social Studies, Physics, Biology, Geography, Foreign Languages, and Computer Science, taking place in early June.
