The tsunami threat has been canceled for Kamchatka and the Severo-Kurilsk district of the Sakhalin region after a powerful earthquake struck the Far East on July 30th.
Sergey Lebedev, the regional minister for emergency situations, announced the cancellation on the government’s Telegram channel, stating that the “all-clear” was given by the leading organization of the metrological service.
Despite the cancellation, Lebedev urged residents and visitors not to rush to the sea.
The earthquake, reported as the strongest in 70 years with a magnitude of 8.7, caused significant tremors in the region. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky experienced tremors of 7-8 points, while Sakhalin felt tremors of up to 5-6 points.
Reports indicate destruction and casualties, leading to a state of emergency being declared in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the Severo-Kurilsk district of the Sakhalin region.
Following the earthquake, a tsunami threat was issued for the coasts of the United States, reaching California and the Hawaiian Islands after a series of warnings.
