Traffic in central Moscow will be restricted on Saturday, May 31st, due to the annual “Green Marathon.” The Moscow Department of Transportation has announced the closures.
The restrictions will primarily affect areas around the marathon route, including Novaya Square, Staraya Square, Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, and various central embankments.
The Green Marathon aims to raise awareness about inclusive education for children with special needs and inform the public about ways to support them.
The marathon schedule includes staggered start times for different race distances. The first race, a 10-kilometer run, begins at 8:15 AM. Following that, a 21.1-kilometer race starts at 9:00 AM, a 4.2-kilometer race at 10:30 AM, and children’s races (400, 600, and 800 meters) at 11:30 AM.
Road closures will be in effect at varying times depending on the location. Novaya and Staraya Squares will be closed from 3:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, Ilyinka, Varvarka, Moskvoretskaya streets, and Vasilyevsky Spusk Square will be closed from 3:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Central embankments, including Sofiyskaya, Raushskaya, and others, will be closed from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Restrictions also apply to Bolshoy and Maly Ustiinsky bridges, Sadovnicheskaya and Bolotnaya streets, Faleevsky lane, and Kitaygorodsky passage during the same hours.
Parking will be prohibited in all areas with traffic restrictions from 12:01 AM until the event concludes. Changes to bus routes in central Moscow are also expected.
A previous event, the “ZaBeg.RF” half marathon, took place recently, attracting thousands of athletes to Red Square. That route included Prechistenskaya, Kremlyovskaya, and Moskvoretskaya embankments, as well as a portion of the Garden Ring.
