The Story of Vanya Lunkov: A Mother’s Fight for Her Son’s Recovery

Anna, a mother from Yekaterinburg, is tirelessly fighting for her ten-year-old son Vanya’s recovery after a tragic accident on March 15th left him bedridden and unable to breathe, eat, or speak on his own. Vanya got entangled in a rope while playing at home.

The accident occurred when Anna found Vanya hanging from a rope attached to a bunk bed after he had been left alone for a few minutes. After finding Vanya, Anna immediately performed artificial respiration while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Doctors connected the boy to a ventilator and rushed him to intensive care.

Due to the resulting brain hypoxia from lack of oxygen, Vanya now requires a tracheostomy for breathing and is fed through a tube. Despite these challenges, Anna remains hopeful and dedicated to her son’s rehabilitation.

Since the accident, Vanya has been in several hospitals and rehabilitation centers, including Hospital No. 9, the Clinical Institute of the Brain, the palliative care unit of Hospital No. 24, the Volkova clinic, and currently the Three Sisters center near Moscow. Anna has observed positive signs of progress, such as improved reaction and clearer gaze.

Vanya is the eldest of four children, and Anna raises them alone in a rented apartment. The accident occurred when Vanya was playing with a rope from school. Before the incident, Vanya was an active and creative child who enjoyed drawing, sculpting, swimming, wrestling, and music.

Anna is actively fundraising for Vanya’s rehabilitation through a VKontakte group. Rehabilitation courses cost hundreds of thousands of rubles, posing a significant financial burden for the single mother. Vanya celebrated his eleventh birthday in the hospital, with his family visiting him. The family plans to return to Yekaterinburg in the autumn, where Vanya will continue his rehabilitation at the Volkova clinic.
