Tanya Drozdova, a 21-year-old from Novosibirsk, passed away in intensive care on June 4th after a long battle with a rare genetic disease. She had successfully sued the regional Ministry of Health to obtain a life-saving medication but died while the decision was being appealed.
Drozdova suffered from ADA-SCID, a very rare genetic disorder. Despite the challenges, she pursued her studies at medical school.
In 2024, Drozdova’s case gained public attention as she fought for access to the necessary treatment, which cost 50 million rubles per month.
The court ruled in her favor, obligating the Ministry of Health of the Novosibirsk Region to provide her with the medication. However, the Ministry appealed the decision, delaying her access to the treatment.
The young woman’s condition worsened as the appeal process dragged on. She ultimately succumbed to the disease, five years longer than doctors initially expected her to live.
