The start of the summer camp season has been recommended to be postponed until June 4th for four children’s camps in the Zabaykalsky Krai region due to a federal-level state of emergency declared because of fires. The decision was made during a meeting of the emergency commission of the government of Zabaykalsky Krai on May 29th.
The affected camps – “Chaika,” “Bairus,” “Dobrograd,” and “Samorodok” – are all located in forest zones of the Chita district.
Nikolai Basov, head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations for Zabaykalsky Krai, emphasized that ensuring safety and preserving lives is the top priority. He stated that forests are closed to the public under the state of emergency and special fire-prevention regime. He urged relevant ministries and departments to assess risks and implement preventative measures before opening camps in forest areas.
Ivan Korenev, Deputy Head of the Zabaykalsky Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, indicated that rain is expected in the region in early June. A Mongolian cyclone is forecasted to bring intense rains, thunderstorms, and possible hail to most districts on June 2nd and 3rd, potentially improving the fire situation.
To provide information to the public, a hotline has been established at the Ministry of Education and Science of the Zabaykalsky Krai, available from May 30th. The hotline number is 8 (3022) 28-52-45 and will operate daily from 09:00 to 18:00.
