Strawberry and Wild Strawberry Picking Season Begins Early in Novosibirsk Region

Novosibirsk residents can anticipate an earlier start to the strawberry and wild strawberry picking season this year, thanks to a warm spring. Agronomists estimate vegetation is ahead by 7-10 days, meaning both types of berries, including garden strawberries, will ripen sooner than usual.

Strawberry harvesting is expected to begin around June 25, with wild strawberries following a week or two later, depending on the specific location. The further south, the earlier the ripening.

While favorable weather conditions like heat, sun, and rain have been ideal for berry development, a late cold snap with snow in May may have caused frost damage to some bushes, potentially impacting the overall harvest size. However, the extent of the damage varies by area.

Strawberry enthusiasts should seek out forest edges with ample sunlight and ventilation, where the elongated berries typically grow on slender bushes. The Kudryashovsky and Karakanovsky forests are known for their strawberry abundance, found in both birch and pine environments.

Wild strawberries thrive in large, sunny fields, although they can also be found in grassy areas, where they tend to ripen later and be smaller. The Moshkovsky, Iskitimsky, and Kolyvansky districts are particularly rich in wild strawberries.

When picking berries, safety is paramount. Be mindful of potential encounters with wild animals by making noise and being observant. Protect yourself from ticks and other insects by wearing light, closed clothing treated with repellents. Avoid camouflage and opt for bright colors for better visibility if lost.

Harvest strawberries with a small portion of the stem, avoiding forceful pulling of the bush. Use a sturdy container to prevent the berries from getting crushed and bring a hat to protect against sunstroke.
