State of Emergency Declared in Several Crimean Regions Due to Frost Damage to Agriculture

A state of emergency has been declared in multiple districts of Crimea due to the devastating impact of April and May frosts on the agricultural sector. The affected regions include the Sudak urban district, as well as the Belogorsky, Nizhnegorsky, Krasnogvardeisky, and Pervomaisky districts.

The declaration, announced on June 10th by the head of the republic, Sergei Aksenov, aims to mitigate the consequences of the unseasonal cold weather.

The primary reason for implementing the emergency regime is to officially acknowledge the substantial reduction in crop yields. This acknowledgment is crucial for agricultural producers, as it allows them to extend lease payments and access compensation for their losses through insurance claims.

Sergei Aksenov has directed the Crimean Ministry of Agriculture to coordinate efforts to address the aftermath of the frosts, while also tasking local administrations with ensuring the effective implementation of these measures.

The unusual weather pattern involved a significant temperature drop in April, following unseasonably warm temperatures in March. Temperatures plummeted below freezing, and some areas even experienced snowfall.

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic, Denis Krayuk, had indicated that the early harvest of peaches, cherries, and plums in Crimea is expected to decrease by 20% due to the frost damage.
