St. Petersburg to Combat Sandstorms on Vasilievsky Island with Greenery

St. Petersburg authorities are implementing a comprehensive plan to combat sandstorms plaguing the Vasilievsky Island reclamation area by sowing lawns and planting trees. Vice Governor Alexey Korabelnikov announced the initiative during a public forum, emphasizing the city’s commitment to improving the environment in the newly created territory.

The sandstorms, a consequence of the land reclamation process, have prompted collaborative efforts between the city and local businesses. Constant watering of the territory is already underway, utilizing stationary watering points, specialized water cannons and two watering machines. However, officials recognize that additional measures are needed to effectively address the issue.

To further mitigate the problem, grass has been sown across 90 hectares of the reclaimed land, with plans to landscape an additional 30 hectares.

A key decision this year involves incorporating nearly 10 hectares of the area into public green spaces. This allows the landscaping committee to develop and implement improvement projects, focusing on extensive tree planting. Experts believe that increased vegetation will significantly improve air quality and reduce the occurrence of sandstorms.
