St. Petersburg Tightens Control Over Parking on Bicycle Lanes

St. Petersburg authorities are intensifying efforts to prevent parking violations on bicycle lanes, particularly along the Fontanka River embankment. Since the beginning of the year, over 20 vehicles have been identified parked illegally in the bicycle lane on the Fontanka embankment.

Out of these, 15 vehicles were impounded and relocated to designated parking facilities. This action underscores the city’s commitment to enforcing parking regulations in areas specifically designed for cyclists.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Transport Committee, which emphasizes that bicycle lanes are crucial for ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of citizens, as well as promoting a healthier environment. Deputy Head of the Transport Committee, Alexey Goncharov, highlighted the importance of these lanes during a meeting focused on strengthening enforcement.

The city’s Directorate for Traffic Management (“DODD”) has been tasked with exploring the implementation of a complete ban on stopping and parking on all bicycle lanes along the Fontanka River embankment.

This measure follows St. Petersburg’s earlier announcement of a plan to construct 300 kilometers of bicycle paths within the next decade, signaling a long-term investment in cycling infrastructure and a commitment to promoting cycling as a mode of transportation.
