Arkady Morozov, 27, has been arrested in St. Petersburg and charged with the murder of his 18-year-old girlfriend. The Moscow District Court ordered his detention following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.
Morozov reportedly told investigators that his girlfriend had been acting distant in the time leading up to the tragic event. He also stated that his significant debt of one million rubles contributed to the deteriorating state of their relationship.
Born in the Pskov region, Morozov’s early life was marked by hardship. His mother passed away when he was three, and his father died in 2022 due to heart issues. After a troubled academic record and a stint in the army, he relocated to St. Petersburg where he met the victim in November 2024.
The couple initially lived with the girl’s mother before moving into a separate apartment. However, the relationship soured when the mother discovered Morozov’s financial troubles and shared this information with her daughter. The debt, accumulated through loans and microfinance organizations, placed a strain on their bond.
On May 30, intended as their six-month anniversary, the girlfriend returned from work and, according to Morozov, acted distant. She expressed a desire to end the relationship that evening.
Morozov claims he lost control, grabbed a kitchen knife, and attacked her as she lay in bed. He further alleges that he attempted suicide after the act but survived.
Following the incident, Morozov contacted the police. He also shared details about the crime in a “bankruptcy company chat” before authorities arrived.
The prosecutor’s office supported the request for detention, and the court has ordered Morozov to be held for two months pending further investigation.
