St. Petersburg Commences Restoration of Suzdal Lakes Ecology

The St. Petersburg government has initiated a project to restore the ecology of the Suzdal Lakes, a major water system and popular recreational area for city residents.

A comprehensive plan has been developed to improve the health of the Suzdal Lakes water system. Engineering surveys and project documentation are nearing completion.

The project aims to enhance the ecological condition and water supply of the lakes, restore the historical water system, and boost their recreational appeal.

The Suzdal Lakes currently face significant human impact and are affected by climatic changes.

The restoration plan includes eliminating illegal waste sites and preventing illegal wastewater discharge. It also involves cleaning and mowing the water areas, gradually removing bottom sediments, and repairing hydraulic structures.

Recent landscaping improvements have already been implemented around the Suzdal Lakes under the “Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment” project.

In 2024, new walking paths, recreation areas, and bicycle parking facilities were opened to the public. The development of large-scale infrastructure on the Upper Suzdal Lake is nearing completion this year. Future work is planned for the Great Lower Suzdal Lake and Middle Suzdal Lake.

The project will also include improvements to the adjacent territory and will encompass the Starozhilovka and Kamenka rivers, which are part of the water system.

An innovative “bioplateau,” a natural filter made of plants to collect pollution, will be implemented near the mouth of the Starozhilovka River. The plants will be mowed at the end of the season.
