Snake Activity Increases in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region: What to Do

With the arrival of warmer weather, snake activity has increased in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, leading to multiple reported bites. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions and know what to do if bitten.

Since the start of the year, St. Petersburg’s ambulance service has recorded at least five cases of snake bites. The Leningrad Region has also seen recent incidents, including the hospitalization of two teenagers in the Gatchina and Vsevolozhsk districts following snake encounters.

To prevent snake bites, the Leningrad Region Emergency Medical Service Station advises wearing high, dense shoes like rubber boots when in forested areas. It is crucial to watch your step and avoid disturbing snakes, even if they appear to be sleeping or dead.

If bitten, immobilize the affected limb and minimize movement. Ensure adequate airflow by loosening clothing and fanning yourself. Taking an allergy pill is recommended. Seek immediate medical attention by going to the hospital or calling an ambulance.

Crucially, do not apply a tourniquet, apply cold to the bite, cauterize the wound, or attempt to suck out the venom. These actions can worsen the situation and hinder proper medical treatment.
