Singer MakSим Discusses Coma Experience and Return to Music

Singer MakSим, who spent two months in a coma in 2021, has opened up about her near-death experience and its impact on her life and music. In a recent interview, she shared details about what she saw while in a coma and how it has influenced her latest work.

Following her recovery, MakSим struggled to create new music for nearly five years. She felt a responsibility to share a meaningful story, considering the prayers and support she received during her illness. This led to her new track, “And Really…”, where she describes her experiences in the parallel world she encountered while dying.

MakSим vividly recalls being in a calm, parallel world and understanding that she was dying. Despite the circumstances, she felt no fear and perceived it as a logical continuation of life. She remembers feeling cold, but not experiencing any discomfort when ice water was poured on her. She overheard a woman saying, “Looks like they are praying for her,” and later, people in coats approached her with a message.

The individuals in coats told her, “They still want to say goodbye to you,” which she initially thought referred to a former partner. They added that promising to say goodbye would allow her to return. Upon waking up, MakSим was fully aware of what had happened and where she was. Doctors had anticipated that she would be incapacitated if she were to emerge from the coma.

MakSим confessed to grappling with the question of why she was brought back. While her children and parents were overjoyed, she wondered about her purpose and what she was meant to do. She reconnected with the person who had fervently advocated for her survival, who she realized deliberately avoided meeting her, perhaps to ensure her return as promised. This inspired her to include a request in her song “And Really…” for him to stay away for the time being, until she has expressed her gratitude to everyone.

Currently, MakSим maintains a schedule of 3–4 monthly concerts in large venues, balancing her performances with raising her children and managing her music school. She is also writing a book and planning a biopic film. She is deeply grateful for the support she received during her illness, acknowledging that many people prayed for her survival. While some may find the lyrics in “And Really…” pretentious, such as the line “the whole world was waiting for me,” she emphasizes that they were chosen for their rhyme and that she wants to thank everyone who supported her.
