Siberia Experiences Series of Severe Weather Events in Recent Years

A spectacular tornado was observed over the Ob Sea on July 21, 2024, marking the latest in a series of extreme weather events in the Novosibirsk region. The tornado was captured on video and shared widely on social media.

The region has faced numerous instances of severe weather in recent years, including powerful storms, heavy rains, large hail, and even tornadoes. These events have caused significant damage and disruption.

In July 2014, a particularly strong storm struck Novosibirsk, bringing widespread hail. Two twin girls died in Berdsk when a tree fell on their tent, and a 28-year-old woman died near Sosnovka. Dozens of trees fell throughout Novosibirsk, damaging power lines and other infrastructure.

August 2020 saw heavy downpours and hail the size of quail eggs in Koltsovo. In June 2021, prolonged cool and rainy weather led to flooding and prompted weather forecasters to declare it one of the coldest Junes on record since 1900.

In August 2022, heavy rains caused flooding in Akademgorodok, and lightning struck a building on Zabalueva Street. August 2023 brought a powerful thunderstorm that left hundreds of homes without electricity and caused several fires, including one reportedly caused by lightning striking a car and another a private home in Pashino. Additionally, in September 2023, hail the size of eggs fell in some areas of the Novosibirsk region.

More recently, in late July 2024, a storm with hail and hurricane-force winds severely damaged the settlement at Duplenskaya station, tearing roofs off houses. In the beginning of Summer 2025 Novosibirsk has already been remembered for heavy rains and hail.

According to Marina Vinogradova, a leading weather forecaster, these events are due to convective cloudiness, which is a normal summer occurrence caused by temperature contrasts and humid air masses. She notes that there can be up to five storm warnings for convection per week during the summer months.
