Severe Weather Causes Havoc in Moscow

Moscow and the Moscow region were hit by a severe downpour on Sunday, June 8, causing significant disruptions across the city. The heavy rain flooded a metro station, disrupted airport operations, caused traffic delays, and damaged gardens with hail.

The “Komsomolskaya” metro station on the Sokolnicheskaya line experienced flooding, with water pouring from the ceiling of the underground lobby. Passengers shared videos of the incident, showing water inundating the area. Authorities cordoned off the leak, and while the situation caused concern, train traffic remained uninterrupted. The Department of Transportation stated that the leak was minor and that municipal services addressed the issue promptly.

Vnukovo Airport also suffered damage as part of the roof collapsed, leading to water entering the terminal. Passengers captured the scene on video, expressing their dismay at the situation. Due to the thunderstorms and strong winds, three flights were diverted to alternate airfields, including Nizhny Novgorod. Airport operations resumed later in the evening.

In a separate incident, a Mosvodostok employee was injured when a strong current dragged him into the Chertanovka River collector. Colleagues and passers-by managed to keep him afloat until rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived.

The heavy rain also led to traffic congestion in various parts of the city. The Department of Transportation warned of local delays in ground transportation due to flooding on the roadways and advised commuters to listen to drivers’ announcements.

The Moscow region experienced large hail in areas such as Naro-Fominsk and Aprelevka. Residents shared photos of the hail, which caused damage to gardens and other outdoor areas.

A storm warning remains in effect for the capital region until three o’clock in the morning, with possible wind gusts of up to 20-25 m/s during thunderstorms. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has urged residents to take precautions.
