Severe Weather Causes Havoc in Moscow

Moscow and the surrounding region were hit by a powerful downpour on Sunday, leading to significant disruptions and damage. The heavy rain caused flooding, airport delays, traffic congestion, and hail damage.

The “Komsomolskaya” metro station on the Sokolnicheskaya line experienced a leak with water pouring from the ceiling into the underground lobby. Although the leak was quickly addressed, passengers captured videos of the flooding. The Department of Transportation stated that the leak was minor and did not interrupt train traffic.

Vnukovo Airport also suffered damage when part of the roof collapsed due to the heavy rain. This caused water to pour into the terminal and led to the diversion of three flights to alternate airports. The airport resumed normal operations later in the evening.

In a separate incident, a Mosvodostok employee was pulled into the Chertanovka River collector by a strong current. He was rescued by Ministry of Emergency Situations employees with the help of colleagues and passers-by.

The heavy rain also caused significant traffic delays due to flooded roadways. The Department of Transportation advised commuters to be cautious and listen to driver announcements.

The Moscow region experienced large hail, particularly in Naro-Fominsk and Aprelevka, causing damage to gardens and property. Residents shared photos of the hailstones.

A storm warning remains in effect for the capital region until 3 AM, with the possibility of wind gusts up to 25 m/s during thunderstorms. The Ministry of Emergency Situations urges residents to remain vigilant.
