A heavy downpour wreaked havoc in Moscow and the Moscow region on Sunday, June 8th, flooding a metro station, disrupting airport operations, causing traffic disruptions, and damaging gardens with hail.
The “Komsomolskaya” metro station on the Sokolnicheskaya line experienced a leak with water pouring from the ceiling of the underground lobby. The affected area was cordoned off, but train traffic continued uninterrupted.
Vnukovo Airport also suffered damage when a section of the roof collapsed, allowing water to enter the terminal. Three flights were diverted due to thunderstorms and strong winds, but the airport resumed operations later in the evening.
In a separate incident, a Mosvodostok employee was pulled into the collector of the Chertanovka River by a strong stream of water. He was rescued by EMERCOM employees with the help of colleagues and passersby.
The heavy rain led to flooding on roadways, causing delays in ground transportation. The Department of Transportation issued warnings urging caution and advising people to listen to driver announcements.
The Moscow region also experienced severe weather, with large hail falling in areas such as Naro-Fominsk and Aprelevka. Residents shared photos of the hailstones, and gardeners faced damage to their plants.
A storm warning remains in effect for the capital region until 3:00 AM, with the Ministry of Emergency Situations warning of possible wind gusts of up to 25 m/s during thunderstorms.
