Russian authorities are warning citizens about a new scam targeting individuals seeking remote work. Fraudsters are posing as internet company managers and offering work-from-home positions with flexible schedules, retyping text from images.

The scheme involves scammers contacting potential victims with offers to retype text from scanned images into electronic format. The message states that they are “looking for people to retype text from scans into electronic format”.

After contacting the victim, the scammers direct them to a website where they are asked to make a “one-time” payment. This payment is a trap.

On average, the scammers collect around 900 rubles from each person, promising earnings 10 times higher for each text completed.

The Department for Combating Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported these fraudulent activities. They are actively investigating these cases to protect citizens from falling victim to these scams.
