Saint Petersburg aims to restore lost green spaces and create a “green framework” to improve the city’s environment and quality of life. This initiative will focus on reintroducing greenery to historical areas and planting trees in areas with high pollution levels.
The Saint Petersburg government is developing a program for extensive landscaping and restoration of lost plantings. The program aims to identify and restore historical green spaces, referencing old photographs of Leningrad to guide the restoration efforts.
Initial restoration efforts may involve temporary solutions, such as planting trees in tubs, alongside larger-scale tree planting projects. The goal is to enhance the city’s comfort and environmental conditions for its residents.
According to experts, ample greenery can lower the temperature by approximately 6℃ and reduce noise levels by around 25%. These environmental benefits contribute to improved health, particularly during hot weather.
The city plans to conduct a scientific assessment to identify areas most affected by air pollution and traffic congestion. By targeting these areas with increased greenery, the city hopes to create more comfortable conditions for residents and mitigate the negative impacts of pollution.
The Committee for Improvement and the Committee for Nature Management will be responsible for implementing this comprehensive program. The program seeks to improve the city’s environment and enhance the well-being of its citizens through strategic landscaping and restoration efforts.
