Russians will have a long weekend in June due to Russia Day

Russians will enjoy a four-day weekend from June 12th to June 15th in celebration of Russia Day. This extended break offers a chance for rest, travel, and enjoyment of the summer weather.

The holiday on June 12th commemorates the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of the RSFSR in 1990. This declaration marked a pivotal moment in Russian history, establishing the priority of the Russian Constitution and paving the way for future reforms. While initially known as Independence Day, the holiday officially became Russia Day in June 1998.

Citizens will also benefit from a shortened working day on June 11th, allowing them to leave work an hour early. The extended weekend is further extended by the переноса (postponement) of a day off from March 8th (International Women’s Day), which fell on a Saturday, to Friday, June 13th.

While some may consider extending the holiday further with vacation days, doing so may not be financially advantageous. June will have 19 working days and 11 days off, leading to a higher cost per working day but potentially lower vacation pay, as vacation pay is calculated based on calendar days, while wages are based on working days. A similar situation occurs in months with numerous holidays, such as January and May.
