Russians Can Avoid a Six-Day Work Week

Russian workers can avoid a six-day work week scheduled for late October into early November by taking paid leave or unpaid time off, although employer approval is required. The extended work week is a result of shifting a weekend day for a public holiday.

The six-day work week is scheduled from October 27 to November 1 due to the weekend of November 1 (Saturday) being moved to Monday, November 3. Although the work week will be longer, employees will receive their standard salary.

Following the six-day work week, there will be a three-day rest period from Sunday, November 2, to Tuesday, November 4, which is National Unity Day.

Employees have the option of shortening the six-day work week by using paid leave or taking unpaid leave. However, it’s crucial to coordinate any leave requests that fall outside the vacation schedule with the employer, as they have the right to deny them. Seeking consent is also necessary for those wanting to take unpaid leave.

Certain categories of workers are entitled to unpaid leave upon request. These categories include working pensioners (up to 14 days annually), individuals with disabilities (up to 60 days annually), and other specified groups. Unpaid leave must also be granted in the event of a birth, marriage, or the death of close relatives.
