A Russian woman with dual citizenship was detained at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow for allegedly smuggling a firearm and a large sum of undeclared money. The woman, identified as Olga, arrived on a flight from Turkey and was found to be carrying a Colt Combat Commander .45 caliber pistol with three empty magazines in her luggage. She also had a bank check for $138,000 that she did not declare to customs officials.
The woman claimed she was unaware of the regulations regarding the transportation of firearms and the declaration of large sums of money. According to the customs service, the woman stated that she believed the rules did not apply to her due to her dual citizenship and permanent residency in the United States.
The woman now faces charges under two articles: “Smuggling of firearms” and “Smuggling of cash and (or) monetary instruments.” If convicted, she could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of one million rubles. The court has ordered her to be held in a pre-trial detention center.
