Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs Denies Development of New Passport Type

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has refuted reports circulating in the media and on Telegram channels regarding the development of a new type of Russian passport. Irina Volk, the official representative of the department, made the announcement on June 16, clarifying that no such initiatives are currently underway.

Volk stated that the MIA has not received any legislative proposals concerning a new passport design. However, she affirmed that the ministry is consistently working to enhance the existing passport’s security features and improve its overall form as part of its routine operations.

Recent media reports had suggested that a new Russian passport design was being considered, featuring a blue color scheme and a QR code containing personal information such as registration details, marital status, and health records.

These reports also claimed that the concept’s authors intended to engage with the State Duma to explore the legislative adjustments, implementation strategies, and distribution methods necessary for the proposed passport model. The MIA’s statement clarifies that these reports are inaccurate.
