Russian Minister Supports Complete Vape Ban

Russian Minister of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, has voiced his support for a total ban on vapes within Russia. This announcement was made on June 2nd during Russian Retail Week.

While Alikhanov acknowledged that blanket bans aren’t always the solution, he believes vapes are an exception. He stated his personal support for a complete prohibition, despite not outlining the official stance of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

As a father, the minister expressed concern over the marketing of vapes and their appeal to younger demographics. He questioned the effectiveness of existing age restrictions and raised doubts about the long-term health consequences of vaping, emphasizing that he is not a doctor, but suspects the effects are detrimental.

Discussions surrounding a total vape ban in Russia have been ongoing for several months. The Ministry of Health expressed its support for such a measure back in January.

State Duma deputies have already drafted legislation aimed at prohibiting both the production and import of vapes into the Russian Federation. Existing regulations already prohibit the sale of vapes to minors since 2023.

Furthermore, nicotine-containing products are restricted to sales within designated stores and pavilions. Since February, penalties for selling tobacco products to children have been increased, with maximum fines reaching up to 2 million rubles.
