Russian Labor Market Trends and In-Demand Professions in 2025

The Russian labor market is showing signs of cooling, with companies increasingly preparing for layoffs. This comes amidst a backdrop of technological advancements and evolving demands for specific skills. While some sectors face a potential decrease in workforce size, others continue to experience high demand.

Several sectors are currently experiencing significant demand for workers. These include industrial and infrastructure construction, the food industry, and delivery, freight transport, and logistics. Within these sectors, professions like fitters, welders, and mechanics are highly sought after. There is also a consistent need for mass personnel, such as packers, pickers, couriers, salespeople, and cooks. Truck drivers, special equipment operators, and forwarding drivers also remain in high demand. In the office environment, sales managers, customer relationship managers, and engineers are leading in terms of employer demand.

The Moscow Employment Service is focusing on addressing the labor shortage in the trade sector. Their database highlights over 110,000 vacancies, with sales managers, marketplace specialists, and merchandisers being the most sought-after roles. The “Professions of the Future” center offers training in 75 in-demand professions, aiming to equip individuals with the skills needed to fill these vacancies. Career mentors are available to assist graduates in finding employment.

The transport sector also faces a shortage of employees throughout Russia. Both municipal and private carriers have been struggling to find drivers for several years. Regional employment centers are also reporting needs for mechanics, cleaners, accountants, and other specialists.

Many Russians are seeking part-time work for additional income. A recent survey revealed that a significant percentage of the population has engaged in part-time work, with some specifically choosing short-term assignments. The speed of payment is a key factor for many, making self-employment an attractive option. Delivery and transportation, retail trade, and warehouse logistics are the most popular areas for part-time work.

Looking ahead, technological advancements and automation are expected to significantly transform the labor market. By 2030, a large percentage of companies worldwide will be impacted by these changes, leading to an increased demand for technological skills. Specialists working at the intersection of different fields, such as ecology and AI technologies, or agronomy and informatics, will be highly valued. Skills in working with artificial intelligence tools will be essential for candidates to remain competitive in the labor market.
