Russian Duma Approves Law Increasing Pregnancy Benefits for Students

The State Duma in Russia has approved a law significantly increasing pregnancy benefits for full-time female students and postgraduate students. This new legislation aims to provide greater financial support during pregnancy and maternity leave.

The approved bill stipulates that pregnancy benefits for eligible students will be raised to 100% of the regional subsistence minimum, irrespective of any scholarship they may be receiving. This change marks a considerable increase from the current system.

Previously, pregnancy benefits for female students were equivalent to the amount of their scholarship, covering 140 days of sick leave. These payments ranged from 9,333 rubles to 23,333 rubles for the entire duration of the maternity leave.

Under the new law, the average pregnancy and maternity benefit for students is projected to be 90,202 rubles. This enhanced financial support is specifically designated for students enrolled in full-time programs.

The Social Fund of Russia will be in charge of allocating and disbursing these benefits, utilizing funds from the federal budget. This centralized approach aims to streamline the process and ensure consistent application of the law.

The bill, initially submitted for review on May 23rd, was officially adopted today. The law is scheduled to take effect on September 1st.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts in Russia to improve the quality of life for its citizens. The government is actively introducing benefits, simplifying access to them, and increasing tax deductions, pensions, and the minimum wage.
