Russian Actress Natalia Tenyakova: A Life of Theater, Love, and Resilience

Natalia Tenyakova, a renowned Russian actress, passed away leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to her craft and a life marked by personal and professional challenges. She was known for her roles in theater and film, including the popular movie “Love and Doves.”

Born in 1944, Tenyakova initially faced opposition from her parents who envisioned a different path for her. Despite their wishes for her to become a teacher, she secretly pursued her passion for acting, enrolling in the State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography. Her father’s disapproval lasted until her mentor, Boris Zon, convinced him of her potential.

During her studies, Tenyakova married Lev Dodin, but the marriage was short-lived. Her encounter with actor Sergei Yursky during a television play ignited a deep love that eventually led to a 50-year marriage. Despite Yursky being in a relationship and Tenyakova being married at the time, their connection was undeniable.

Tenyakova divorced Dodin and later reunited with Yursky at the Bolshoi Drama Theater. Yursky ended his relationship with ballerina Zinaida Sharko, and the couple married in 1970. They had a daughter, Daria, who also became an actress.

Following their marriage, Yursky faced political disfavor, leading the couple to move from Leningrad to Moscow. Tenyakova supported her husband by taking his last name and finding work in Moscow theaters.

In 1986, Tenyakova made a notable return to film in “Love and Doves,” where she played the role of Baba Shura. Her performance was memorable, despite being younger than the character she portrayed.

After Yursky’s death in 2019, Tenyakova found solace in her theater work. She continued to perform despite health challenges, including high blood pressure. She had plans to perform in a play and celebrate her 81st birthday before her passing.
