Russia Introduces New Airspace Class H for Drones

Russia has established a new class of airspace, designated as ‘H’, specifically for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation on August 1. This legislative change, implemented through a government decree, aims to simplify drone flights and further integrate UAVs into the Russian economy.

The introduction of Class H airspace brings the total number of airspace categories in Russia to four, joining the existing classes A, C, and G. This move was initiated following instructions from President Vladimir Putin to create a distinct airspace class to streamline drone operations.

Andrey Nikitin, the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, emphasized the growing importance of drones in various sectors of the Russian economy. He noted a 26% increase in UAV flights during the first half of the year, highlighting their increasing integration into the transport system. Nikitin stated that the legislative formalization of a separate class for drones represents a significant advancement for the future of Russian air transport.

The new regulations are expected to foster the development of civilian drone technology and enhance the safety of both manned aviation and drone operations.

Class H airspace will encompass altitudes up to 150 meters, and a simplified operational procedure will be in effect for drones weighing up to 30 kg. However, these drones will be required to have specific equipment, including navigation and control systems.
