Russia Day Long Weekend: Russians to Enjoy Four Days Off in June

Russians will have a four-day weekend from June 12th to June 15th in celebration of Russia Day. This provides a short summer break for citizens.

The holiday is in honor of Russia Day, celebrated annually on June 12th. Employees will also benefit from a shortened workday on June 11th, allowing them to leave one hour early.

An additional day off was added on June 13th due to the переносу (transfer) of March 8th, International Women’s Day. Because March 8th fell on a Saturday, the holiday was moved to the nearest Friday.

Russia Day, commemorated on June 12th, marks the adoption of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of the RSFSR in 1990. This declaration established the priority of the Russian Constitution over Union laws and paved the way for future reforms. Originally, the holiday was known as Independence Day, but it was renamed Russia Day in June 1998.

The next long weekend for Russians will be in November, with the celebration of National Unity Day on November 4th.

While the extended weekend offers a welcome break, taking a longer vacation during this time might not be financially advantageous. June has only 19 working days and 11 days off, increasing the cost of each working day. Consequently, vacation pay, which is calculated based on calendar days, may be lower compared to months with more working days, like July or October.
