Russia has blocked access to Speedtest by Ookla, a popular internet speed testing service, citing threats to the security of the public communication network and the Russian segment of the internet. The blocking was reported on July 30th by Interfax, referencing the Russian supervisory authority, Roskomnadzor.

Roskomnadzor suggests using the “ProSet” application as a replacement, a Russian-developed tool by the RKN’s Center for Monitoring and Management of the Public Communication Network.

The “ProSet” application allows users to check data transfer speeds, mobile signal levels, and the availability of internet resources on Android devices.

Identifying security threats has become a priority for Russian departments. This move follows a recent cyberattack that caused widespread disruptions for Aeroflot, impacting numerous flights and passengers at airports including Sheremetyevo and Pulkovo.
