Rosgvardia of St. Petersburg Strengthens Security Units with Enhanced Weaponry

The Rosgvardia (National Guard) in St. Petersburg is bolstering the firepower of its security units protecting strategic facilities. A draft order proposes expanding the allowed weaponry to include machine guns with increased ammunition, addressing emerging threats like explosive-laden drones.

The proposed changes, outlined in a document published on June 6, will equip guards with more robust defense capabilities. In addition to standard pistols and carbines, security personnel will be authorized to use machine guns.

The updated regulations also increase the ammunition load for machine guns. Guards will receive three additional loaded magazines along with two boxes containing belts of 200 rounds each. This expanded ammunition capacity ensures a more sustained response in potential threat scenarios.

Furthermore, the revised order broadens the definition of permitted weapons. Instead of listing specific models, the document now categorizes authorized firearms by type, such as pistols, automatic weapons, and machine guns, provided they are officially part of the Rosgvardia’s arsenal.

The Rosgvardia attributes these changes to the evolving security landscape. The emergence of new threats, particularly drones equipped with explosive charges, has prompted the need for enhanced defensive measures. The agency also cites the ongoing special military operation, where firearms have proven effective against drones.

Currently, the draft order is undergoing anti-corruption review. The anti-corruption assessment is scheduled to conclude on June 12.
