A road bridge collapse near Vygonichi in the Bryansk region on May 31 resulted in the derailment of a passenger train traveling from Klimov to Moscow. The incident led to at least four fatalities, including two members of the locomotive crew and two train passengers.
Authorities have reported that at least 31 people were injured, including a five-month-old baby who is in serious condition in the hospital. Rescue operations are underway as emergency services work to clear the debris and extract passengers from the wreckage.
The Moscow Railway stated that the derailment occurred at 22:44 on the Pilshino – Vygonichi section due to the collapse of the road bridge span, citing “illegal interference with transport activities.” The Transport Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident but has not yet confirmed the exact cause.
Alexander Bogomaz, Governor of the Bryansk Region, confirmed that all victims are being transported to medical facilities in the region, with arrangements in place to airlift seriously injured individuals to Moscow if needed. A temporary accommodation center has been established for the train passengers.
Traffic on the A-240 highway section has been closed, and train traffic has been suspended. Recovery trains have been dispatched to manage the aftermath of the accident, which has caused significant traffic congestion in the area.
