Review of JAC T9 Pickup Truck: A Blend of Past and Future

The JAC T9 pickup truck presents a compelling option for those seeking a versatile vehicle that bridges the gap between classic truck functionality and modern amenities. While assembled in Ulyanovsk under the Sollers ST9 name, it draws strong parallels to the UAZ lineup, catering to a target audience that has long awaited such a blend.

Priced around 3.65 million rubles, the JAC T9 competes with rivals like the Great Wall Poer and Changan HunterPlus. The T9 boasts a canonical pickup design with a 5.33-meter length, double cab, and one-ton carrying capacity, featuring a traditional frame, spring-loaded front suspension, and a solid rear axle on leaf springs. The all-wheel-drive system includes a rigid front axle connection via a BorgWarner transfer case, a downshift, and a self-locking rear differential.

Despite its generous cargo bed length of 1590 mm, the 470 mm high sides limited the ability to transport a bicycle with a lid. The pickup’s large dimensions make it somewhat cumbersome in urban environments, requiring careful maneuvering in parking lots and tight spaces, though cameras and mirrors help mitigate these challenges.

The JAC T9 shines on dirt roads, thanks to its long-stroke suspension and robust tires. While the suspension is relatively soft, it can feel unstable on uneven surfaces, and the exposed transfer case poses a potential risk. The heavy rear axle can also result in a less smooth ride on rough terrain.

In terms of handling, the JAC T9 offers a passenger car-like experience, though it’s not ideal for high-speed driving. The absence of a diesel engine is a drawback, as the 2.0-liter turbo engine (224 hp) delivers decent dynamics but comes with a high fuel consumption of around 16 liters/100 km.

The interior is designed with comfort in mind, resembling that of a crossover. It features a 10-inch tablet on the center console, a digital instrument panel, and a two-position automatic selector. While the climate control is single-zone and the steering wheel is only adjustable in height, the leather seats with heating and electric adjustments offer a comfortable driving experience. The second row provides ample space for passengers, though the ride is noticeably shakier than in the front.
