Restrictions Proposed for Booking.com’s Potential Return to Russia

If Booking.com resumes operations in Russia, its services would be restricted to booking international travel only. This measure aims to safeguard the interests of domestic tourism platforms.

Sergei Boyarsky, head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, announced this proposal, emphasizing the need to protect the growth of Russian travel aggregators that have effectively replaced foreign services for domestic tourism. According to Boyarsky, limiting Booking.com to cross-border travel would allow Russians to book accommodations abroad and facilitate inbound tourism for foreigners, without posing a competitive threat to local businesses.

Boyarsky noted that foreign platforms voluntarily exited the Russian market due to political considerations. He argued that allowing these companies to return and regain their monopoly would be detrimental to the domestic tourism sector. He stated that any return would need to consider the consequences of their earlier departure.
