Restoration of the Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo Announced

The Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo, a significant spiritual center in Moscow, is slated for restoration at an estimated cost of 372 million rubles. The tender for the project was recently announced on a public procurement website, signaling the commencement of much-needed repairs and upgrades to the historic landmark.

The restoration project aims to address various aspects of the cathedral’s structure and infrastructure. Plans include reinforcing the roof and attic, replacing outdated materials with modern alternatives, stabilizing wooden elements, and enhancing fire safety measures.

The Epiphany Cathedral holds a prominent place in Russian history and culture. Alexander Pushkin, the renowned Russian poet, was baptized within its walls. The cathedral also served as the final resting place for Patriarch Alexy II. Furthermore, it houses revered relics of St. Alexy of Moscow and a highly esteemed copy of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

Originally built as a wooden church in the late 17th century, the Epiphany Cathedral underwent reconstruction in stone in the early 18th century. The current structure, designed by architect Yevgraf Tyurin in the late Empire style, dates back to the 1830s. The cathedral boasts a five-nave design, a five-tiered iconostasis, and a towering central dome reaching a height of 56 meters, capable of accommodating up to 3,000 people.

Throughout its history, the Epiphany Cathedral has served as a vital spiritual and social hub. In the 19th century, it housed a free school, an orphanage, and a nursing home. During the Soviet era, parishioners actively defended the cathedral against closure, preserving its function as a place of worship. Even after losing its status as the Patriarchal Cathedral to the Assumption Cathedral and later the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, the Epiphany Cathedral remains an important spiritual center in Moscow, hosting regular services and celebrations of major church holidays.
