Restoration of Railway and Road Traffic after Train Derailment in Kursk Region Expected Within Four Days

Railway and road traffic in the Zheleznogorsky district of the Kursk region is expected to be restored within four days after a freight train derailed on the night of June 1. The acting governor of the region, Alexander Khinshtein, announced the timeframe and that a headquarters has been deployed to manage the situation.

The incident, which the Investigative Committee has classified as a terrorist act, occurred when a railway bridge exploded under a train. The explosion caused a diesel locomotive and several cars to derail.

The train’s crew sustained injuries as a result of the incident. According to Khinshtein, the head of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, promised to nominate them for an award.

Emergency services, including the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Guard, the Investigative Committee, the Transport Prosecutor’s Office, railway workers, and road services are on site. Resources are deemed sufficient to handle the situation.

The fire in the locomotive that broke out after the accident was quickly extinguished. The damaged diesel locomotive has been moved, and one of the overturned cars has been put back on the rails. An emergency train will soon remove it. A temporary detour has been set up for road transport.
