A meticulously restored 1972 VAZ-2103, a classic Soviet-era car, is being offered for sale in Novosibirsk for 5 million rubles. This price rivals that of a used Land Cruiser or a brand-new Chinese vehicle.
The vehicle, dating back to the initial production year of the model, boasts a 1.5-liter engine producing 77 horsepower and has a stated mileage of 100,000 kilometers. According to the seller, this particular model is one of the first 300 ever produced and features unique characteristics, such as the absence of trunk lining and a solid front panel, distinguishing it from the VAZ-2101.
The advertisement emphasizes the high-quality restoration and the preservation of the original technical passport, asserting that this car is likely the only one of its kind in such pristine condition in Russia, if not the world. The seller believes it would be a valuable addition to any collection and confirms the sale is directly from the owner.
The VAZ-2103, introduced in 1972, was conceived as a more refined version of the VAZ-2101, often referred to as the “kopeyka”. Based on the Fiat 124 Speciale, it featured an upgraded suspension, a more powerful engine by Soviet standards, and an improved interior.
The “troika” became a symbol of status for the Soviet middle class, frequently seen in party garages and taxi services. More than just a “Zhiguli,” the VAZ-2103 represented the first Soviet premium-class sedan.
Today, restored “troikas” serve as a vintage alternative to contemporary retro cars, valued for their ease of repair. The accessible components and design allow for tuning of the engine and chassis, contributing to the car’s cult status. These vehicles are now participating in retro rallies and are viewed as an investment opportunity.
