President Vladimir Putin has expressed doubts about Germany’s suitability as a mediator in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, citing the country’s military support for Kyiv. He believes the supply of Taurus missiles and the presence of German Leopard tanks on the battlefield raise concerns about Germany’s neutrality.
Putin stated that the potential delivery of Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine would not alter the course of the conflict but would severely damage Russian-German relations. He emphasized that Russia now views Germany as a supporter of Ukraine, even considering them “accomplices in these hostilities.”
During a meeting at the SPIEF on June 18, Putin responded to a question about whether a new German Chancellor could be a better mediator than the US President. He reiterated his doubts, highlighting Germany’s involvement in providing military equipment and potentially Bundeswehr officers to Ukraine.
Despite these concerns, Putin clarified that Russia remains open to communication and would not refuse contact if there was a desire for dialogue. He acknowledged the possibility of future discussions, but emphasized that Germany’s current stance casts doubt on its neutrality.
