President Vladimir Putin has approved the Strategy for the Development of the Russian Navy for the period up to 2050. This decision underscores the high priority Russia places on its naval capabilities.

The strategy outlines the future composition of the fleet, its peacetime and wartime objectives, and an analysis of the global military-political landscape. It also assesses the current state and capabilities of the Navy, incorporating lessons learned from the Special Military Operation.

The Ministry of Defense initially drafted the strategy, and it was subsequently refined by the Russian Maritime Board with input from various federal departments and organizations. Putin approved the final version on May 30.

According to presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev, this marks the first time such a comprehensive strategic planning document has been adopted in modern Russian history. The strategy was developed following a meeting in the Kremlin in July 2024.
