Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke: Expert Recommendations

Simple lifestyle adjustments, including diet and exercise, alongside regular medical check-ups can significantly lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Vascular surgeon Ashot Grigoryan emphasizes the importance of proactive measures to maintain cardiovascular health.

A heart attack occurs due to an acute shortage of oxygen to the heart, while a stroke results from a similar lack of oxygen to the brain, both caused by interrupted arterial blood flow. Atherosclerosis, the gradual narrowing of arteries due to plaque buildup, is a primary culprit in these conditions.

While cholesterol contributes to plaque formation, the rupture of these plaques can trigger the formation of blood clots, leading to vessel blockage. Hemorrhagic strokes arise from ruptured blood vessels, often due to aneurysms or uncontrolled hypertension. Ischemic strokes, on the other hand, are caused by emboli – traveling fragments of plaque or blood clots – that obstruct blood flow to the brain.

Reducing cholesterol intake through diet is crucial in preventing atherosclerosis. This involves limiting animal fats and rapidly digestible carbohydrates found in fast food and sugary drinks. Incorporating fiber-rich foods and healthy fats, such as vegetable oil, into your diet is beneficial. Replace unhealthy snacks with fruits, berries, or nuts. Regular physical activity, such as morning exercises and walks, aids in fat utilization and reduces cardiovascular risks.

To prevent ischemic stroke, timely medical examinations are necessary to detect and eliminate vegetations or blood clots. Monitoring blood pressure is also essential to prevent hemorrhagic stroke, as frequent fluctuations can weaken blood vessel walls.

Regular medical check-ups, including ultrasounds, can help detect aneurysms early. Dietary fish such as navaga offer benefits for blood vessels. Navaga is low in calories, rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals. Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen blood vessel walls, reduce bad cholesterol, and prevent atherosclerosis.
