A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka in the Pacific Ocean on July 30, triggering tsunami warnings across the region. The earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded in the area, was felt strongly in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The earthquake caused damage to buildings, including the collapse of a wall at a kindergarten that was fortunately closed for repairs. Emergency services are inspecting buildings for further damage.
Despite the earthquake’s magnitude, authorities report no serious injuries or casualties. Temporary accommodation centers have been established for residents who are concerned about remaining in their homes due to potential aftershocks.
Seismologists warn that aftershocks could continue for up to a month, and further tremors are possible. The earthquake generated a tsunami that reached Japan and the Hawaiian Islands.
