A Yakutia Airlines flight from St. Petersburg to Yakutsk experienced smoke in the cabin due to a malfunctioning power bank in a passenger’s carry-on luggage. The incident occurred on flight YAK-488 on June 4th.
The airline reported that a short circuit in the power bank caused the smoke and partially melted the carpet. One passenger sustained injuries as a result of the incident.
Passengers and flight attendants acted quickly to identify and address the source of the smoke. The airline praised their vigilance and coordinated efforts in preventing serious consequences.
The flight continued normally and landed safely in Yakutsk. Upon arrival, a 21-year-old passenger with burns to her foot was treated at the airport’s medical center. She explained that her power bank spontaneously combusted, and she sustained burns while extinguishing it.
The injured passenger was subsequently transferred to the burn center of the Republican Hospital. No other passengers requested medical assistance.
Yakutsk transport police have initiated an investigation into the incident. An investigation team is interviewing witnesses and examining the scene.
Yakutia Airlines has reminded passengers of the regulations for transporting devices with lithium batteries. Power banks and portable charging devices are permitted in carry-on luggage only. The airline emphasizes that this allows the crew to respond promptly to any potential issues. Lithium batteries and electronic devices are prohibited in checked baggage. The airline also advises that devices be protected from short circuits through insulation of contacts and proper packaging. Passengers are also encouraged to refrain from using or charging electronic devices with lithium batteries during flights.
