Power Bank Fires on Plane, Injuring Passenger

A passenger was injured after a power bank caught fire on a Yakutia Airlines flight from St. Petersburg to Yakutsk, prompting an investigation by the Yakutsk Transport Prosecutor’s Office. The incident occurred approximately one hour after takeoff from Pulkovo Airport on June 3.

Radmila, a passenger on the flight, sustained burns and cuts to her leg while helping to extinguish the smoking charger. She ran barefoot to the source of the smoke and used water provided by other passengers to put out the flames. Molten plastic from the power bank stuck to her foot, requiring medical attention upon arrival in Yakutsk.

The airline reported that a pilot who was a passenger on board assisted in containing the situation by moving the smoldering power bank to the toilet, where it was placed in a fireproof container and extinguished. According to Yakutia Airlines, a fire extinguisher was used in the toilet, contrary to initial reports, and was subsequently replaced upon arrival in Yakutsk.

Radmila recounted hearing a loud sound and seeing black smoke rising from under the seats, causing panic among the passengers. She was given painkillers by fellow travelers and kept her leg in a container of water and ice provided by the flight attendants for the remainder of the flight.
