Potato Hilling: Timing, Methods, and Watering for a Bountiful Harvest

Potato farmers understand the importance of proper care for a healthy and abundant crop. Hilling, the process of piling soil around the base of potato plants, is a crucial technique.

Hilling potatoes, ideally done twice per season, promotes better tuber formation by providing loose soil for growth. The first hilling should occur in June, followed by a second hilling three to four weeks later. It’s important to avoid hilling during the hottest parts of the day; late evening or cloudy weather is preferable.

The process involves creating a mound of soil, about 10–20 centimeters high, around each plant after weeding. Traditional tools include a hoe or a manual hiller. For larger plots, walk-behind tractors with hilling attachments can be used, with double-row options offering efficiency.

Watering is another essential aspect of potato care, especially during bud formation when tubers begin to develop. In hot, dry weather, watering should occur at least twice a month, while normal precipitation may only require monthly watering. Begin watering when plants reach 10–15 centimeters in height and ensure nighttime temperatures are above +10 degrees Celsius. Each bush requires approximately 2–3 liters of water, applied with a sprayer to avoid soil erosion.
